Verbs with D-classifier
More verbs: ni#D+ush~deł 'dance'
The verb ni#D+ush has several interesting properties.
- It has a ni-prefix in the disjunct zone. This means that the Glottal Stop Insertion Rule applies.
- The verb stem ush does not begin with a glottal, but with the vowel u. Therefore, the D-classifier and the verb stem merge into one syllable, dush.
- This verb has two verb stems. One of them is used for singular subjects, and one of them for plural subjects. For a speaker of English, this does not make much sense: why use a different word for a single activity as opposed to a group activity? From the Dena'ina point of view though, there is a difference between just one person dancing and a bunch of people dancing all together. This is just something you have to remember about this verb.
- Note that the stem deł does not take the D-classifier, but the Ø-classifier.
